Creative Writing

I was fortunate to meet derek beaulieu when I was asked to add his name to the certificate he received as Poet Laureate. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to his Mount Royal University Creative writing class and showing some of my calligraphy and book art. I did derek's name several different ways to show the students some of the options available and then chose one of these to letter the student's names.

This was created by writing in black ink and then tracing only the shadow which would be seen on the right and underneath the letters. derek was curious to see how I would write this quote which is attributed to Hugo Vernier from Georges Perec's "The Winter Journey".

Altered Books

Throughout the year of 2012/2013, book artists across Alberta participated in a 'round robin' collaboration. Members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild created altered books - choosing a theme and rules around which the group of artists would gradually transform the chosen books into works of art. The artists, including myself, worked on the books on monthly rotation, responding creatively to the original artist's vision and rules of engagement. The results are a stunning and imaginative series of works, each filled with the altering work of several different artists. In November 2015 the show, “Altered States” brought a collection of these works together for public display at Elevation Gallery in Canmore as part of their One White Wall Project. This is my Pippi Longstocking book.

Versals

One of our BVCG members, Lynn S, taught some great 14th century versals. I practiced doing these while we were away, usually doing the drawing and decorating in the car while we were traveling and the painting in the evenings.The black is a glaze pen and the gold is fine tec watercolour. My “F” is in the October 2015 BVCG journal.

In Santa Cruz I found a book with more versal ideas and kept going!

Continuing to Stretch

We spent a wonderful two months in California. I tried out my new lettering skills everywhere I could! Well almost everywhere. Here is the shower door in San Francisco.

Next big art project - Santa Barbara where cousin Sandy let me play on the side of her new art studio!

Big Brushes

At the end of July I had a wonderful time at the Passionate Pen Calligraphy conference at Sonoma State University in California. I was very fortunate to study with Loredana Zega from Slovania. We worked with big brushes on walls – way out of my comfort zone but I loved it!

Alcohol Inks Again

Lettering on a Vellum Envelope for the upcoming Passionate Pen conference....and my submissions for the California Poppy display and Participants display.

One of my pieces was entered in the Calgary Stampede and won first in the class and first in the Section for a medal and a cash prize!

I have had a lot of fun playing with alcohol inks....just a few colours of copic marker refills can be combined to make a rainbow of colours. Inspiration is everywhere! And adding lettering makes it more fun!
